Very disappointing stay

Me and my father were very disappointed with our 4 night stay at the Hotel Camelia last week. I just want to clarify that we didn't choose this hotel directly through our travel agent as a first option, it was given to us as a second option as our previous hotel option had changed so upon searching the hotels name on google with a good star rating and seeing images of what the hotel looked like I said yes. We arrived at the hotel in the afternoon after being on a 3 hour train journey from Venice as part of our travel package and was greeted by the receptionist who wasn't very welcoming. Upon telling the receptionist our booking name, he started to doubt we even had a booking, making us feel as though we weren't welcome and he didn't think we were good enough guests to stay at this 3 star hotel and even asked for further information which I had provided and still felt inadequate in his opinion and was even surprised when he saw on the computer system that we had already paid for our stay in advance. Much to our shock, as was previously not told this by our travel agent was that they required a £100 deposit in case of damages to the room. This whole process was dragged out longer than it needed to be especially as we were tired and just wanted to get to our room and relax. After eventually checking in, we entered our room and was very surprised to see that my fathers bedding had several obvious stains on it eg dried blood which made us wonder if the bedding had even been cleaned by staff. Also, we noticed there was an inadequate supply of tea and coffee which was not tailored to our length of stay and didn't include milk either. We did communicate with the receptionist to let them know about the dirty sheets and inadequate beverage faculties. They ended up getting one of cleaners to change the sheets and receptionist was extremely reluctant to provide more supplies and refused to provide milk upon asking. I believe that there was also a language barrier too when I was speaking English. I don't think it was a difficult request as in my opinion it was a given that there were the correct beverage faculties as there is even a kettle in the room. It got to a point where we had to find a supermarket to buy more tea and milk which was difficult given you only have a small amount of space in your fridge. The stain situation got worse, as it did happen again later into our stay and even when only being given one pillow, I had to get another one from the wardrobe which had an obvious stain too which I wasn't confident that it had even been cleaned. We then had to go back to reception as it had happened again and the receptionist that we met on arrival didn't believe what we were saying was true at all so it felt like he thought we just wanted to cause trouble which wasn't the case. It went as far as, my father having to go downstairs again, to show him the evidence which he apparently wasn't happy about and even apparently spoke to the cleaning manager. We did not expect to be treated in this way and didn't deserve to be as it was there fault not ours. We are both still shocked and disappointed by there level of bad customer service. Lastly, I would like to include the only few positives during our stay where that the hotel is in a good location from the train station that has plenty of shops and there are restaurants within walking distance and the breakfast was nice with good selection to choose from. Overall, I would not recommend this hotel to other people and would recommend staying at another hotel when in Rome.

Excellent location near Stazione Termini, Piazza Reppublica and some great restaurants and Cafes. Alessandro at Reception particularly welcoming and helpful. Maid service excellent. In common with other hotels walls are very thin so adjacent room noise could be a problem, but overall, recommended ( we did not have breakfasts).

Welcome and Employees: Okay welcome and took only 5 minutes to check in. They gave us a good recommendation for dinner within walking distance. Room and Facilities: Location was good, only 15 minutes from the train station and many restaurants. The room was good sized, clean and surprisingly quiet since it was on the main street. The climate system worked well. Breakfast – typical for European hotels, included scrambled eggs and a good choice of sweets, breads, meat, cheese. Breakfast room was not overly cozy and unwanted person wondered in and took a long look at the buffet. An employee escorted him out. Summary and Recommendation: We had a problem on checkout due to the “new” credit card system. The employee had trouble cancelling out the 100 Euro credit card deposit required upon check it, which caused a stressful 20-minute delay. Too bad as the rest of the stay was very good. The system is archaic and old fashioned. Also, be aware that Rome is charging 6 Euros per person per day tourist tax!

Bedbugs!! - alert

The room had bedbugs; we woke up with a "textbook" picture of multiple bites, which were very disturbing and took days to heal. Neither the hotel nor Agoda (through which the booking was made) provided a satisfactory response and compensation. A disgrace.

A Calm Reprieve

I stayed for three nights at the Hotel Camelia as a solo traveller. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful and gave me wonderful tips for transit to sight seeing locations. While close to Termini station, the hotel's location is a bit out of the way and can feel a bit frayed around the edges. That turned out to be a blessing as it was wonderful to leave the crowds of Rome to an area that was calm and normal. An added bonus was the street market in the mornings! Even though travelling on my own, I felt perfectly safe at the hotel and the surrounding area. I thought that Hotel Camelia gave me great value for money and will certainly stay there again when I next visit Rome.
